An historic
tradition …
Colyton Country Market was
started
with much fanfare in March 2008,
by Judith Vaughan, Frances McCarthy, Jacky Roberts-wake and
Monica Williams. After an absence of 120 years,
the town’s Market Place once again enjoyed the colours, flavours
and atmosphere of a local food market, re-connecting to a
tradition established in 1208.
Colyton enjoys no fewer than three royal market charters, granted
over the centuries by King John, Edward III and Henry VIII. It
was the evocation of Henry’s Tudor charter that helped local
enthusiasts in their campaign to return the market to its
rightful place in the heart of the town.
