Christmas Fayre & Country Market

Local food in the heart of the country

An historic tradition …

Colyton Country Market was started with much fanfare in March 2008, by Judith Vaughan, Frances McCarthy, Jacky Roberts-wake and Monica Williams. After an absence of 120 years, the town’s Market Place once again enjoyed the colours, flavours and atmosphere of a local food market, re-connecting to a tradition established in 1208.

Colyton enjoys no fewer than three royal market charters, granted over the centuries by King John, Edward III and Henry VIII.  It was the evocation of Henry’s Tudor charter that helped local enthusiasts in their campaign to return the market to its rightful place in the heart of the town.

Colyton Christmas Fayre is part of the Colyton Promotions Group, which is also responsible for the highly successful re-introduction of the Colyton Country Markets. It helps to promote the town and sustain its future viability by way of fund-raising and creating fun events. The aim has been to create two big events each year with a "wow factor" normally June and December which is the annual Christmas Fayre.

The groups' objectives are:

  • Supporting green initiatives such as locally grown produce with very few food miles & creating a more pleasant environment for future generations.

  • Sustaining the local economy by making the town more attractive to visitors and ensuring the long-term viability of businesses & services in the town for residents

  • Social responsibility for bringing the generations together and forming a community bond with cultural events, getting businesses involved and supporting local community groups, such as the scouts, local primary school and youth groups.
